Holy cow, page 2 is out?!?!?!
oh boy, this is very exciting and very exhausting at the same time... but i managed to finish this little piece of nightmare in little more than 2 weeks! i've been working like mad (when i'm not studying... ) on this baby.
now... what can i say about this?
i gave a little more attention to the composition of each frame, this time. not that the result is any better than the sloppy first page, but i think i might be slowly learning.
some of the horses look horrible, i know. but drawing, colouring and shading this many horses in so little time is maddening - i now worship "real" horse-comic-makers more than ever!
anyway... i hate the landscapes. those canyons/cliffs/plateaus kill me every single time. why, oh why did i come out with such a stupid idea?
oh, almost forgot. that cave-painting-thing-ish is actually a mix of 2 different real cave paintings (the little guys were actualy hunting deer, and the horses didn't look like they were being chased at all), plus a rocky texture and cracks. i was gonna use the most famous horse painting (the one that looks like a real przewalsky wild horse), but it was too obvious and i fell in love with this little herd.
ahhh, right! for those who might see the expression of the grey/grulla horse on the right center pannel as one of aggression, well... it is not (though it's a bit hadr to tell, without downloading). it is actually a gesture of submission, usually performed by a horse under 4 (it's kind of the case) towards a stallion, specially if it's a stranger - and it's called "snapping". true, it's not THAT well done, but i was tired of the blank expression, and thought this would be the right thing to do, when a lonelly young stallion meets a herd of full grown (though short, by his standards ) adults.
oh, and yeah, this "prologue" thing is still gonna last for some more pages (together with the slightly annoying old paper/sepia tone). initially i had planned some 10 pages before entering the live action story, but i'll hopefully be able shrink it. please, bear with me!
and i think that's all i can tell you, for now.
in hope you like it better than the first one, and i expect lots of critics, cuz i need them!
now running out to make page three!!!
it's gonna be a real pain in the rear end, cuz it's gonna have LOTS of humans, and... err... i can't draw humans. it's going to be so much fun...
info and credits:
media: photoshop elements 6 (shading, cropping and after-effects, mostly) and corel 9 (linearts and colouring), with tablet.
time taken: 2 weeks, working between 0 and 8 hours a day.
references: horse pics for 3 of the horses on the center right pannel, including the failled "snapping" expression. and lots of pics for the canyons and cliffs...

I really love the soft background and that chestnut horse is a beauty
